how it started

Hey there – I'm Jess! I'm an industrial designer and the founder of Compound. With a background in environmental science, I developed a keen interest in the realm of DIY materials, where individuals could learn to create safe and compostable biomaterials right in their own homes. During my exploration, I came across numerous material "recipes" but I noticed a common issue: many of them were either overly simplified or laden with complex scientific terminology. There was a lack of resources that shared this knowledge in a way that was both accessible and informative. Recognizing this gap, I set out to provide a platform that offers simple yet comprehensive guidance in the world of DIY materials.

Our vision is to empower individuals with the knowledge required to transform locally available waste streams into innovative materials and projects. This project has been strongly influenced by open-source material-based platforms like Materiom and the Precious Plastic movement. These inspiring initiatives have played a significant role in shaping our project and driving our passion for creating a more sustainable future.
